Enrico Pieranunzi and Kenny Wheeler, two magnificent soloists and equally important structural columns of the CAM Jazz catalog, are together again: the Anglo-Canadian trumpet and flugelhorn player is co-leader with the Roman pianist and two other musicians of uttermost significance such as doublebassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron in “As Never Before”, an album of clear and rare expressive elegance.
Recorded on November 30 and December 1 of 2004, in the renown Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg, Germany, “As Never Before” contains nine tracks, seven of them compositions by Pieranunzi and two collective improvisations that further illustrate the elevated degree of harmony between the four musicians: Johnson and Baron build, as one can well note, what Pieranunzi loves to define as “the trio of my heart”. A harmony that during the entire album translates into music of great lyrical sense, of profound melodic breadth, rich with blissful collective and individual invention.
