"There are two musical sides to guitarist Diego Barber. At a certain point in a musician’s training, they are typically asked to decide what direction their music should take. Classical or jazz? Barber ignored the question and suggests that they aren’t mutually exclusive. His new CD, The Choice (Sunnyside), displays the guitarist’s ease playing in both jazz and classical genres. He is supported by an array of talented jazz musicians, including drummer Ari Hoenig, bassists Larry Grenadier and Johannes Weidenmueller, and saxophonists Seamus Blake and Mark Turner. Barber also delivers a fantastic classical guitar performance on his own “Sonata Banc D’Arguin.”
