No one coming of age in the 60's as I did could escape hearing The Beatles. They're the Rodgers and Hammerstein of this era. So I start off with a classic of theirs, I Will. It's followed by the all-time great standard, All of Me, one of the first I learned. In respect and love for the music of Duke Ellington I continue with Solitude, a haunting composition that I never tire of melodically or lyrically. Speaking of Mr. Hammerstein, there's his The Song Is You, an epic standard. When my parents went to see the Broadway show My Fair Lady they brought home the cast album that I nearly memorized and includes the touching I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face. In addition to show music and The Beatles, I also listened to pop songs growing up, such as Ruby and the Romantics' version of the harmonically interesting Our Day Will Come. The Bossa Nova was also big around that time. The title cut, Wave, is one of many Jobim pieces I often return to. Here, I've reworked the chord progression at the 'B' section. Finally, the album closes with Here, There and Everywhere, another tasty morsel from The Beatles. - Armen Donelian
