Jazz is famously an art form born in the polyglot melting pot of the New World, where the sounds and sensibilities of Africa and Europe mixed along with `the Latin tinge’ emphasized by Jelly Roll Morton. Israel is another polyglot, democratic society, one where East meets West. Several of today’s brightest young jazz stars are from Israel, and they revel in American jazz history even as they bring their own unique cultural references to the music – having grown up in a Mediterranean country where the rhythms of North Africa are as near to the ear as the age-old songs of Eastern Europe. These sounds and experiences – as well as an excellent system of music education – were key influences on a generation of Israeli musicians that’s really coming into its own. Anzic Records is deeply proud of its connection to many of these artists, something reflected in this anthology. Most of this music was recorded in the ultimate melting pot of New York City, where some of these performers live full- or part-time. But whether they’re in New York or in Tel Aviv or on the road in Europe and elsewhere, they are very much citizens of the wonderfully inclusive, expansive world of jazz.
