I never felt drawn until recently to write in a jazz big band format. I'm glad I reconsidered. What began as trepidation turned into excitement, as I sensed the limitless possibilities that the orchestra presented. As We Gather All Around Her is based on the Appalachian hymn ""I Have Seen the Rock of Ages."" Dockery Farms is inspired by the Mississippi plantation where Charlie Patton, Howlin' Wolf, and others picked cotton and learned the Blues. Blue Lake Morning was inspired by the stunning beauty and gracious support of the Blue Mountain Artist residency in the Adirondacks. I also acknowledge the Macdowell Colony where this music was germinated. In a project of this magnitude the players work awfully hard. I thank them for their dedication, with a special nod to J.C.
