It is fascinating to hear how musicians arrive at certain milestones in their musical development. Bassist Hans Glawischnig’s study of acoustic bass guitar began while touring with the legendary Ray Barretto, a situation where a double bass was logistically impossible and the electric bass disfavored. Glawischnig’s new CD Jahira (Sunnyside, 2012) features his acoustic bass guitar in a trio format alongside two extremely talented up and coming New York musicians, saxophonist Samir Zarif and drummer Eric Doob. The trio plays a combination of Glawischnig originals and a handful of esoteric, jazz genre spanning covers, hinting at the group’s credo (hidden in the album title): “jazz history roundabout.”
