Poesia is the second album on the CAM Jazz label by one of the best pianists in this latest generation of international jazz artists. Due to the excellent results of Unicity, recorded and published in 2006, Edward Simon thought it time for an encore, once again calling upon John Patitucci and Brian Blade, musicians who needn’t any introduction. Both members of the formidable Wayne Shorter quartet, Patitucci and Blade make up an extravagant rhythm section, giving to Edward Simon adequate support and, at the same time, interacting at one’s best with the leader’s instrument. The three first met back in 2003, during the recording of Patitucci’s album Songs, Stories and Spirituals. “Something happened on that date that stuck with me forever,” the Venezuelan pianist recalls. “Our chemistry was extraordinary, and I promised myself that at some point I would make a record with this trio. The playing of both John and Brian contains an element of mystery that makes them very enjoyable to play with and to listen to. Brian is similar to me in that he is more introverted, while John is more extroverted, and our energies help us bring out the best from each other. I tend to be more controlled, and John urges me to jump off the cliff. Brian is a very expressive, sometimes explosive drummer, but he’s also sensitive to the more subdued and serene side of my music.” The albums now are two and Poesia further reveals the interplay that has matured in this period of time between the members of this excellent trio, among the best out there today.
