There was one thing original about Trio 3 D: the pianist was a lady, rare for the period in Brazilian music circles. The impetuous playing of Tania Maria had such an impact on the audience that she quickly took over as leader of the trio before she went solo to defend her own musical concepts based on a form of samba-jazz. Her immediately identifiable style – even if, early on, it borrowed from Elis Regina, at least in her singing (she was then the most famous singer in the MPB or Musica Popular Brasileira movement that had taken over from Bossa Nova). The mimetic posture, which caused more than one to smile, wasn’t that evident in her piano playing, even if Tania Maria confessed to being influenced by Brazilian pianists Luiz Eça, a founder-member of the Tamba Trio, one of the landmark-groups in Bossa Nova, and Johnny Alf. In addition, no venue could resist this artist schooled the hard way in cabarets and popular clubs. Whilst Brazil was living the darkest days of its dictatorship, and the large Brazilian community in Paris counted numerous political exiles at a high cultural level, the doors to America opened for Tania Maria and her celebrity could no longer be denied. She would become a reference for Brazilian music outside her native country.
