A classically trained pianist but a natural vocalist, she was influenced by artists as diverse as Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Luiz Eca, Sarah Vaughan, Anita O'Day, Tom Jobim and Milton Nascimento and developed her own percussive fusion of Brazilian rhythms and jazz, first in the clubs of Sao Paulo, then in Paris to where she relocated in the mid ‘70s.

The LP Via Brasil recorded in Paris, in 1974, by the French label Barclay is now released on CD for the first time.

Boto, the drummer, also studied classical music. He had accompanied Jorge Ben, Chico Buarque de Hollanda, Ivan Lins, Carlos Lyra, Luiz Eça, among others. He provided Tania Maria with rhythmic support that allowed her to express herself freely.
Hélio, the bass player, also classically trained, had accompanied Tania Maria for the three years preceeding the recording.
In those first years in Paris, Tania Maria more or less instinctively fixed a style based on a form of samba-jazz, a clear style that erased the overly-ethnic aspects of the Samba while borrowing from the jazz form. Her rising celebrity would no longer be denied.
