Gate learnt guitar and fiddle from his father, who played traditional cajun, country, and bluegrass tunes of the region, then quickly began to incorporate and expand on all genres available, while complementing his repertoire with the big band sounds of people like Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Stir in a bold tenacity, a mighty dose of confidence and unbridled energy…and the roux began to boil! Whether he was “blow¬ing” the roof off of Don Robey’s old Bronze Peacock Club in Houston, fronting a 23 piece band across the Southwest, “hobnobbin” at Carnegie Hall, or merly holding court for the lunch crowd at the Blue Bird Cafe, what came out was uniquely Gatemouth ...
