"Like Clameurs (released in 2007) Trails of Tears has its roots in a profound quest for meaning. Using the terrfying tales of he Cherokee nation;s long, hard battle sa its argument - like some Cherokee Iliad teh oultine of which is traced by Bernard Vincent in his accompanying notes - the music of Jacques Coursil calls on the fundaments of Afro-Armerican history, one of whose most important expressions is represented by Jazz ( a number of black American musicians. like Sunny Murray, can claim Amerindian origins.)

But in a much broader manner, Coursil, both a musician and an accademic. speicfically questions colonialism and the moment in history when two worlds - the Old and the New - overbalanced and multiplied trials of suffering: those Trails of Tears echoed by both Glissant's poems and his ""Tout Monde"" concept.

Strictness of form and row emotion. The project also had to be conceivable apart from all the elitism; it had to address, with humility, everyone for whom artistic stakes rejoined those of the World. One can also note that Jacques Coursil conceived of this project in seven part, like a Passion and as many stations on the Way of the Cross, thus reminding us that the fate of those Indians still speaks to us today, like a vibrant liturgy.
