Alongside the legendary Toots Thielemans, the incomparable Stevie Wonder, and his contemporary Grégoire Maret, Glasser stands in a small circle of those who have discovered, in the dynamics of the chromatic harmonica, a soulful palette for jazz improvisation on chord changes in any of the twelve keys. Jazz harmonica is often overlooked because of the few practitioners that concentrate on the instrument. South African born pianist/harmonica player Adam Glasser decided to feature his chromatic harmonica playing on his new recording, “Free At First.”Glasser performs a variety of compositions that display not only his versatility on the instrument but also the multiple jazz traditions that he fondly embraces, especially the tradition of Township jazz of South Africa.
