Other People is the third album by CAM Jazz with Kenny Wheeler as leader and marks the veteran musicianʼs first venture into recording with a string ensemble, in this instance the phenomenal Hugo Wolf String Quartet.
A musician whose creative longevity is truly extraordinary, the trumpet and flugelhorn player has faced, in this new recording, one of those challenges that in the past have fascinated, and continue to fascinate, many jazz musicians:
playing with a group of strings. To make Other People Kenny Wheeler has, in fact, involved one of the most famous string quartets active today: the Hugo Wolf String Quartet. As guest on the CD and, also, a most constant and congenial partner of the Anglo-Canadian musician for decades, is the British pianist John Taylor, another artist who is evermore solid in the CAM Jazz catalog. For Other People Kenny Wheeler has written eight compositions that highlight his own natural, admirable lyricism. Other People is an important album, not only because it offers the listener an unprecedented Kenny Wheeler: in every note of the CD he fully seizes the refined world of sound from an artist who is, above all, an extraordinary poet. One who can make his instruments sing, and those of others, in a peerless way, can therefore communicate a profound sense of humanity.
