Henri Salvador - vocals
Still as lively and spirited as ever at the age of 89, Monsieur Salvador nevertheless decided it was time to call a halt to the punishing schedule of his live shows. and he called his new album, released in October 2006, "Révérence" (Bowing Out). The album, part of which was recorded in Rio de Janeiro with the legendary Brazilian arranger Jaques Morelenbaum as producer, had a strong bossa nova feel. Highlights included "Cherche la rose", a duo with the Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso and a guest appearance by Gilberto Gil on "Tu sais je vais t'aimer" (a cover of Tom Jobim’s classic "Eu sei que eu vou te amar" adapted into French by Georges Moustaki).
Brazilian music has had a strong influence on Mr. Salvador. During the 1940’s Salvador lived and worked in Brazil and met the young singers and composers from Rio of the new wave that would start the musical revolution called “bossa nova” including Roberto Menescal, Carlos Lyra and Marcos Valle.
On his new album, the great French crooner also paid tribute to the late French novelist Françoise Sagan ("Mourir à Honfleur") and Ray Charles with "Alleluia ! je l'ai dans la peau" (a French cover of one of the American music star’s classics). "Révérence", with its perfect fusion of nostalgia, bossa nova and rhythm'n'blues, proved Salvador’s talent for switching between genres with the greatest of ease.
Reviews
Much of Reverence radiates a delicate bossa essence. The results, althoughmostly relaxed and low key, are truly arresting.
